A hundred years ago, while suppressing a vicious beast, the Dragon God Chiwen expended his divine power and fell into eternal solitude. To walk among mortals, he created a puppet avatar with an independent soul: Jiling. Carrying some of the Dragon God's memories and emotions, Jiling performs divine duties in the guise of an innocent, carefree boy. But he doesn't know that he is just one of countless puppet husks in the pond, a sensory tendril through which a god feels the warmth of the mortal world, and a pawn that can be taken back at any moment.
He is Lijie, the most loyal commander of the Shilin Sect. An ancient wound and an obsession caused his soul to be torn apart by the Six-Eyed Twin Butterfly, creating two beings from one. His bright side became Lijie, whose lifelong faith is serving the Dragon God, and whose blade is raised only to protect Jiling. His dark side became Yuan Wuhuo, consumed by an obsession he cannot let go of. He wants to end the suffering Jiling endures as a stand-in and help him find “release.” They share the same origin: one fights desperately to protect, the other to destroy. In the end, both are driven by something they cannot let go of, deep in their souls.
When a heart-stealing murder case begins, fox demons infiltrate the city, and undercurrents swirl through Luo'an, all the pawns step into the century-old game laid out by Chiwen. Jiling blinks innocently and asks Lijie, “Will we always be together?” Lijie silently nods, gripping his sword tighter.
