In the summer of 1983, six people, each with their own secrets, were trapped in the no-man's land of the northwest. In this restricted area, known as the "Mother Land of Ghosts" by the locals, there is a millennium-old belief in "Earth Immortals" - those who enter will be selected to "return to their places", and those who return will not die but become gods. When people begin to behave abnormally and when folk rituals actually work, truth-seeker Lu Ming and doctor Shen Yibai gradually uncover the truth: there are no gods, only an ancient fungus manipulating human nerves. But after the truth was revealed, a more cruel problem emerged - the infected could not be identified in the early stage, and there might already be someone in the team who was not "themselves". Amid suspicion and fear, the secrets of the six people were exposed one by one, trust collapsed, and violence escalated. In the end, some people choose to sacrifice themselves to block the fungus, and some people walk out of the no-man's land with a heavy truth - but he can never be sure whether he still carries dormant spores with him.
