Twenty-nine-year-old Qiao Wen is an editor of a media company. He lives in big cities and has written countless chapters but has never completed a novel. After reuniting with his best friend from college, Chen Wang, his sudden death became the opportunity for him to really start writing. Qiao Wen decided to write a book called "Why Should I Write a Novel", trying to use fiction to retain his old friends, and also to find answers to his life that he had been unable to speak.
But as the writing progressed, he gradually discovered that old friends, exes, parents, and even himself had all changed in the words. He thought he was getting closer to the truth, but in fact he kept revising his memory, whitewashing his failures, and looking for explanations for his cowardice.
