Lang is a special agent assigned to the Secret Service’s presidential detail. He keeps a low profile, stays out of the scene, and simply does his job well each day. His partners, Rebecca and Michelle, are the only two people he trusts: the kind of trust that comes from working on the same team so long that you know what the other person is going to do without a word.
During an overseas assignment, the hotel where the president is staying is hit by an explosion. Lang is out buying coffee and becomes the team’s only survivor.
Michelle is dead. Rebecca, too...
The investigation soon takes a turn. An unexploded car bomb is found in the underground garage, and Lang’s fingerprints are recovered from the vehicle. They weren’t left during the mission. Three days earlier, Lang had conducted a routine inspection of the car, opened the trunk with his bare hands, and set his coffee down in the cup holder. The steam and coffee stains made his fingerprints unusually clear.
An ordinary moment becomes ironclad evidence.
Lang escapes while being transferred into custody and becomes an internationally wanted “terrorist.” He begins investigating the truth on his own, following the trail Michelle left behind, step by step toward an answer more complicated than a terrorist attack. There are no heroes there, no clean endings, only ordinary people crushed when a System collapses.
It's refreshing and contains a lot of foreshadowing. I'm looking forward to the follow-up.
