In the original Kite, Song Xiao'an is an underrated character. He is one of the three chief aides serving the Military Statistics Bureau’s Sixth Brother, Zheng Yaoxian. Together with Zhao Jianzhi and Gong Shu, he is hailed as one of the bureau’s “Three Greats.” A Buddhist who abhors killing, he is one of the few “clean souls” in the bureau’s killing machine. He is devoted to his mother and loyal to Sixth Brother, indifferent to fame and fortune, and both brave and resourceful. Yet his life is an unmitigated tragedy. He never knows that the Sixth Brother he serves is a Communist, or that the raid he risked his life to cover at the docks was a trap laid by Sixth Brother himself. Before he dies, he says, “Heaven has treated me well. I got to see Sixth Brother once more before I died. My life has been worth it.” He goes to his death with a grateful smile, never knowing he was betrayed.
This book is going to let Song Xiao'an learn the truth.
