The first night I returned to the village to hold a wake for my grandfather, the village chief warned me:
"Whoever knocks tonight, don't open it."
But in the middle of the night, the courtyard door still rang.
The person calling my name outside the door was my childhood friend who had drowned when I was a child.
From that night on, water seeped into the mourning hall, the well of the dead opened, and the abandoned temple in the back hill lit up with red lights. The whole village seemed to be hiding something from me.
It wasn't until later that I realized that three generations of my family had stayed in this village not just to survive.
But to repay a debt that should have been repaid for the whole village long ago.
