Ganghwa 1876--Based on the Yunyang Incident and Ganghwa Treaty in 1875-1876, it tells the story of the game between North Korea, the Qing Dynasty, and Japan in the dramatic changes in the East Asian landscape. Through the perspectives of three protagonists - Korean aristocrat Li Haoran, Qing Dynasty official Chen Anbang, and Japanese military officer Yamamoto Kenji - the novel shows the helplessness of small countries, the ambitions of big countries, and the struggles and choices of individuals in the torrent of history.
There is no if in history. After the Ganghwa Treaty was signed, Korea gradually became a semi-colony of Japan and was finally annexed in 1910. But the spirit of those who fought for North Korea's self-improvement, those who maintained their conscience despite the aggression, deserves to be remembered.
