Journey to the West: I Am Tang Sanzang, and I Send Buddhas to the Western Heaven

Tang Sanzang really isn’t here to dutifully complete the pilgrimage this time. In everyone else’s eyes, he’s a white-robed holy monk, gentle as jade, whose every step seems to earn merit. In truth, he carries the original edition of the True Scripture of the Great Dao. He says, “This humble monk is infinitely compassionate,” while delivering instant salvation with a single word. When he encounters a demon, he first asks whether it’s worth recruiting; when he meets a deity or Buddha, he starts thinking about how to get under their skin. As they journey west, he turns the original story’s disciples protecting their master into the master training his disciples. The female demons who once blocked their way and brought calamity are one by one enlightened into joining his side. And the original story’s final destination, Spirit Mountain, becomes in his eyes a massive reckoning.
