The Bizarre Obsessions of Fallen Kings

Does a dynasty collapse by chance, or is its fall already inevitable, rooted in the ruler’s character? Emperor Huizong of Song wrote the most beautiful lines in his slender gold script, yet signed the treaty that doomed his country. Emperor Chongzhen’s diligence in governing only hastened the empire’s demise. Li Yu’s grief for his lost homeland could find expression only in an immortal lament. What we see is not merely the end of history, but souls trapped by their obsessions on the throne. This book delves into the minds of these last rulers, examining their obsessions, whether artistic, obsessive, or absurd, and exploring how these seemingly personal “fixations” became levers that shifted the fate of empires, ultimately leading to irreversible tragedy.
