As the “chief civil engineer” at a Martian colony, he was in charge of building the Great Wall of Mars to hold back the sandstorms. An accident during a “controlled demolition” (he had actually mistaken a Martian signal tower for a nail and pulled it out) unexpectedly triggered a wormhole, sending his soul back to Earth.
