Ten years ago, on a stormy morning just after the college entrance exams, Li Chaoyang and his older sister, Li Yunqiu, witnessed their father, Li Dahai, die a brutal death in a muddy ditch beside the highway west of Longjiang City.
The case was hastily ruled a robbery and murder. The killer went free, and the unsolved case was buried, planting in Li Chaoyang an obsession with pursuing the truth at all costs.
Li Chaoyang and Li Yunqiu both went to college.
The year they graduated, his sister vanished without explanation and was never heard from again.
Ten years later, Li Chaoyang is head of the Major Crimes Unit in the Longjiang County Criminal Investigation Division. Steadfast and composed, he handles cases by the evidence and the law, yet he has never been able to let go of his father's case.
A bizarre murder of a delivery driver, whose body bears striking similarities to his father's, suddenly tears open the long-healed wound and gives the old case a chance to be reopened.
Facing layers of resistance from colleagues and powerful forces, he investigates alongside his trusted partner.
As he digs deeper, he uncovers a vast web of collusion between foreign powers and people in positions of authority, entrenched for years.
Threats, obstruction, and ambushes come one after another.
The mastermind strikes back again and again. The truth seems within reach, yet each time they are driven to the brink of despair.
What keeps Li Chaoyang moving forward is the sight of his father lying in the mud after that rainy night, and the words his father once said to him: “Chaoyang, do you know why I gave you that name? I hoped you would always turn toward the sun. Even if all you can see ahead is a faint glimmer, I hope you keep moving toward it...”
This novel is really great, the more I read it the more I am fascinated by it. I hope the author can make more updates.
I stayed up late and read more than 40 chapters in one go, which was quite exciting. It's worth reading, the only regret is that there aren't many words. Big cheers for the author
