In the eighteenth year of the Republic of China, in Qingxi Village near the sea in the south of the Yangtze River, widow Lin Wanqing and her two children remarried to the honest butcher Chen Jingshan. The two children in the reorganized family went from conflicting and tit-for-tat to gradually getting along and accepting each other. The family also took in Gu Anyu, a wandering boy who had fled from famine.
