In the eighteenth year of the Republic of China, in Qingxi Village, a coastal town in Jiangnan, widow Lin Wanqing remarries Chen Jingshan, a simple, honest butcher, and brings her two children with her. The children from the two newly blended families go from clashing and treating each other like enemies to gradually finding common ground and accepting one another. The family also takes in Gu Anyu, a homeless boy fleeing famine.
Life is full of bumps in the road. The neighbors misunderstand them, and they struggle to scrape together school fees, but the family always supports one another, turning hard times into something sweet. This is a heartwarming story of family and growing together, with no contrived misery, just the everyday warmth of a Jiangnan town and a group of ordinary people learning to call one another family beneath the same roof as they weather the storms together.
