Synopsis of The Northern Sea Ruins
In the seventh year of King Zhou's reign, the seventy-two lords of the Northern Sea rebel. Yuan Futong leads a host of demons to occupy the ancient ruins of the Frozen Abyss. The entire court is terrified, and only Grand Preceptor Wen Zhong volunteers to lead the campaign. He thinks it will be no more than an ordinary rebellion to put down, unaware that his foes are not monsters, but the three hundred lingering souls trapped in the frozen earth since Chiyou's defeat a thousand years ago.
When Wen Zhong enters the Northern Sea, he finds that the baleful energy will not dissipate and the bone spirits cannot die. He is not fighting a war, but confronting an old grudge forgotten by Heaven and Earth. In the capital of Chaoge, Daji wreaks havoc in government and tortures loyal officials in the bronze cauldron. On the frozen soil of the Northern Sea, Wen Zhong holds out for fifteen years, exhausting his troops and provisions before finally understanding the true purpose of this campaign: it is not to eliminate demons, but to deliver the souls of the dead.
By the time he returns to Chaoge fifteen years later, the dynasty is already a rotten tree on the verge of collapse. The moment Wen Zhong returns, he finally understands: the Heavenly Dao sent him away only to let the Calamity of Investiture unfold as planned.
This is a story of a lone loyal minister, an ancient grudge, and reconciliation with fate.
