This novel differs greatly from the TV adaptation. My version leans more heavily into the historical setting of the time. If that bothers you, please think carefully before reading. People have different tastes, so I understand that some will like it and others won't. If you enjoy it, keep reading; if you don't, move on to the next book. (ಥ_ಥ)
Set during the prosperous reign of Emperor Qianlong, A Pearl in the Palm Reimagined tells a classic tale anew. Xiao Yunyan, daughter of Xiao Zhihang, the governor of Hangzhou, is born with a chivalrous heart and has roamed the Jiangnan region helping the helpless since childhood. With both parents alive and a close, loving family, she is as close as a sister to Ziwei, the daughter of Xia Yuhe. Thanks to her family's longstanding friendship with the emperor, she enters the capital as an “Imperially Appointed Young Lady.” She earns the Empress Dowager's affection and the Empress's admiration, and begins a romance of equals with the Fifth Prince, Yongqi. With the spirit of a wandering knight, she dispels the undercurrents of palace intrigue and wins people over with her sincerity, eventually becoming the darling of everyone. She laughs her way through the imperial palace and writes the legend of a true daughter of heaven.
The most outstanding thing about this fan work is that it successfully created a convincing "group favorite" Xiao Yanzi - her likability is not based on aura, but on her sincerity and magnanimity, which wins everyone's love. Ziwei's unconditional favoritism towards Yanzi, the Queen's cold-hearted love but the Emperor's pampering like a father and a friend are all written in a delicate and moving way. The writing and ink of daily life are as gentle as jade, and trivial matters such as learning to write, practicing swordsmanship, and delivering sweet-scented osmanthus cakes are given real emotional weight. The only criticism is that the pace is a little slow and the plot is not advanced enough. But if you prefer the smooth daily life of the palace, this is precisely its charm.
