On the Canglan Continent, Lu Chen, the unwanted son of the Lu family, has been shackled by the secret of his birth since childhood. His mother was a Holy Maiden of the Upper Realm, taken back to the Heavenly Realm by force for reasons unknown. His father vanished mysteriously, leaving behind only a betrothal agreement with the Li family, held in place by a debt of gratitude for saving a life long ago. When Lu Chen comes of age, the Li family, deeming him lowborn and weak, tears up the engagement in public, humiliates him without restraint, and even tries to eliminate him for good. Lu Chen narrowly escapes death and fights his way into the Chaotic Lands. Hunted and betrayed, he tempers his resolve in desperate straits and builds a power from nothing, only to see it crushed after he provokes a formidable enemy. Forced to hide in the Bewildering Forest for three years, he meets the woman who will capture his heart and saves a Holy Maiden in distress. He finds true love, but also becomes entangled in a painful romantic fate.
Lu Chen sweeps aside his enemies in the Lower Realm, breaking through one cultivation stage after another until he reaches its peak, the Spirit God Realm. But just as he is about to ascend, a powerful figure from the Upper Realm abducts him and turns him into a gladiator slave, forced to entertain others. When his mother's family learns he exists, they send people to wipe out every trace of him, slaughtering the entire arena. Lu Chen escapes by sheer luck and is left to wander the Upper Realm, repeatedly hunted yet repeatedly breaking through his limits. There, he reunites with his father, who has spent years in hiding while building an assassin alliance to save Lu Chen's mother. Together, father and son overcome the family's trials and rescue her.
When demons from beyond the world invade and the Canglan Continent teeters on the brink of destruction, Lu Chen seals the Demon Sovereign at the cost of his own freedom, leaving a hidden danger for his descendants. In the end, he remains with the woman who has shared life and death with him, and they have three children: Lu Yu, Lu Yu, and Lu Chao. The Holy Maiden who loves him can only watch as he enters the Realm-Breaking stage and heads into the endless void beyond the world, left with a lifetime of regret.
