In 19th century London in the Victorian era, Richard Markham, whose family was in decline, separated from his younger brother Eugene. Richard stood up for justice but was repeatedly framed. He was imprisoned, homeless, and had a life-and-death battle with the corpse-stealing murderer "The Resurrection Man." Eugene became a cunning swindler and infiltrated the aristocratic circle. The novel runs in two parallel lines, giving a panoramic view of the luxury and corruption of London's upper-class aristocracy and the sinful suffering of the lower-class slums. It reveals dark secrets such as collusion between politics and business, rampant gangs, corpse theft and selling of babies, and black magic sacrifices. It uses strong social criticism to tear open the class gap and moral abyss under the bright surface of the foggy city.
