This Henan Boxing Champion Worked to Save His Fellow Villagers in 1942

Chen Shanhe, a washed-up underground boxing champion,

was drinking five-yuan erguotou and riding a beat-up electric scooter that rattled everywhere except its bell,

when he slammed into a freight truck. He opened his eyes again and

found himself in the middle of the devastating Henan famine of 1942!

No limitless supermarket! No golden finger handed to him for free!

Just a rickety portal, and supplies he has to earn by working and completing tasks!

✅ Bury a starving victim, earn three coarse-grain cakes

✅ Beat up three thugs stealing grain, earn five coarse-cloth outfits

✅ Dig a well, earn a water-purifying bucket

✅ Bring down a heartless landlord hoarding grain, earn two hundred jin of life-saving rice

This boxing champ used to earn prize money in the ring. Now he punches for steamed buns!

The number of refugees has climbed from ten to three thousand, and the tasks are ten times harder.

Chen Shanhe rolls up his sleeves and bares his fists:

“Let’s do this! As long as I’ve still got breath in me, the tasks won’t stop, and no one will starve to death in front of my fellow villagers!”

Su Wanqing, a Kaifeng university student he rescued, is gentle yet resilient.

She helps me keep accounts, tend the wounded, and comfort orphans. She’s become the only light in my life amid this chaos.

I secretly save white-flour buns for her, and she secretly sews insoles for me.

“Wanqing, stick with me. There’ll always be enough buns, and nobody will bully us!”

When the locust plague comes, I lead the whole village in digging trenches and catching locusts.

When the defeated troops arrive, I send the military bullies running with one punch apiece.

When the Japanese army draws near, I sling a sack of grain over my shoulder and take her hand,

leading three thousand fellow Henan villagers west for a thousand li, all the way to Shaanxi!

For everyone else, 1942 is a living hell.

For me, it’s a boxer’s journey of redemption through hard work.

I’m no hero. I just want my fellow villagers

to have a hot bun to eat and live long enough to see the dawn.
