The Great Song’s Secret War

During the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Northern Song, secret conflict between the Song and Liao simmered beneath the surface. Lin Wan, an orphan, bears a top-secret mission: expose the flaws in the Song Criminal Code, manufacture wrongful cases, and undermine the foundations of the Song legal system, bringing down the Central Plains by striking at its very roots. Skilled in medicine and deeply perceptive of human nature, she is both the mastermind stirring up turmoil across the city and a pitiful soul burdened by a blood feud, whose heart remains with her homeland and its people.

Zhao Qingyan, a secret envoy of the court, is ordered to operate undercover and keep watch on both the treacherous official and her. Shen Mo, an upright judicial officer steadfast in his commitment to the law, knows nothing of the hidden entanglement between them.

A string of murders brings a decade-old wrongful imprisonment to light. A contest over nation and family puts human feeling and legal principles to the test. When a plot to destroy the law meets an innocent heart, and the obligations of a foreign people clash with Han blood ties, one truth is ultimately borne out: the law has its measured standards, and the heart holds a sliver of conscience.
