Jiraiya's unhappiness was never due to his death, but to the faith he devoted his whole life to, the people he protected, and his deep love, which ultimately failed to reach a happy ending. He used a mortal body to perform deeds of gods, and used his life's blood and tenderness to live forever in the hearts of countless people.
