Lin Jiu'an seemed to be someone fate had especially favored, wrapped in countless auras and layers of protection. No one dared bully or provoke her. Yet she was also unfortunate: she had lost her birth parents before she was even born. Her father, Lin Yiting, was a bulwark of Jingze, but when the northern wolf tribe of Canglang Kingdom attacked the frontier, he fell forever in a pool of blood at Yanmen. At the time, she was still in her mother's womb, not yet having seen the world.
Her mother, Mu Lingshuang, the woman who had once dazzled the capital, was mortally wounded while protecting Huangfu Jing, then still the Crown Prince, from Prince Ning's assassins. She used the last of her strength to bring Lin Jiu'an into the world, then closed her eyes forever.
Born prematurely, she suffered from heart palpitations from the moment she was born. Like a delicate dodder vine unable to withstand the wind and rain, she could not learn martial arts or endure exertion, and medicinal broth was practically part of every meal. The imperial physicians were always saying, “The young lady must rest and recuperate,” but she was never alone during those quiet years.
Mu Lingzheng, King of the Southern Frontier, doted on her and was her firmest support in the southern lands. He was always sending new and unusual treasures to the palace, and had even said that the Mu residence in the Southern Frontier would always be her home.
Lin Jiu'an's life was like an ink-wash landscape painting. One half was the heavy ink fate had splashed across it, filled with irreparable loss; the other half was the warmth added by those around her, spreading into boundless tenderness and protection. She grew up slowly amid the mingled scents of medicine and love.
Though she never knew the warmth of her parents' embrace, she was never short of the world's most sincere affection. She lost her parents' love, but received more favoritism than anyone could ask for. Though she was burdened by illness, fate gently compensated her in another way.
She held four identities: the emperor's daughter in the palace, the precious jewel of the Lin family, the sole heir of Guixu Ferry, and the adopted daughter of the Wuling Sect.
