The novel tells the history of struggle and spirituality of small people in this great era. It depicts the migration, toil, bleeding and sweating of Chinese ants in the 1990s. The four protagonists, Yuan Hongtao, Jiang Haiyan, Sun Yuhan and Jiang Haizhen, are interrelated contemporaries and independent living individuals.
For ten years, I accompanied them between the remote countryside in the north and the development zones in the south, weeping and singing with them, and witnessed the struggle history of a realist, the destruction of an idealist, the rise of an upstart, and the struggle of a laid-off female worker from humiliation to strength.
