She Said No

At twenty-eight, Chen Zhiyi lost both her job and her supposed right to be liked.

Her boss said she wasn’t capable enough, her colleagues laughed at how easy she was to push around, and her mother scolded her for being useless. A blind date didn’t mince words: “You’re pretty average-looking, and you’re way too dull.”

She had spent twenty-eight years learning how to please the whole world, only to realize that no one had ever truly cared about her.

Standing on the company rooftop, she thought: If I died tomorrow, had there been even one day in my life that I lived for myself?

The answer was no.

That night, she wrote a resignation letter with just four words: I quit.

It was the most satisfying thing she had said in twenty-eight years.

A story about a woman learning to say no.

For everyone who has ever asked themselves in the dead of night, “What am I even doing with my life?”
