My Moonlight Tenant

After my girlfriend jumped into the river and took her own life, I spent three years in Wuhan as little more than a walking corpse. Then my first love suddenly returned to China and bought the riverside apartment my girlfriend had always dreamed of living in. “I just wanted an excuse to see you.” Then the girl from the flower shop handed me a piece of candy. “Keep it in your mouth when things get hard.” One wants me to turn back, while the other is helping me move forward. And in my pocket, I still carry the diary of my dead girlfriend: “Go find someone who can make you smile.” That broke me. Some people teach you to cherish what you have by leaving; others show you the answer by staying by your side. [Slow burn, literary, heartbreaking before it turns sweet]
