The Blood-Red River

In 1979, war broke out along the southern border.

A senior official’s son receives his transfer orders and is “banished” to Border Company Nine.

He thinks he’s there to pad his resume,

until the company commander takes a bullet meant for him,

until he finds a bloodstained IOU among the man’s belongings:

“120 owed to Auntie Wang, 200 to Uncle Li… The compensation will cover it. Don’t cry.”

When the smoke clears, the Red River keeps flowing.

Some people make it home alive. Others remain in the southern borderlands forever.

But they all share one name: heroes.

Dedicated to the martyrs who died and the heroes who survived the Sino-Vietnamese Self-Defense Counterattack. In tribute to our fathers’ generation!
