In 1983, Lin Zhao discovered that she was "sick" - she saw her reflection in the faucet smiling at herself, heard non-existent noises, and suddenly shouted "Stop reading" at a factory-wide meeting.
Doctors said she was "mildly delusional." Neighbors said she had "something wrong with her brain." Even her mother told her to "stop being crazy."
So Lin Zhao learned to pretend to be normal. She pretended to be so good that everyone believed her. But only she knows that those "crazy" moments are her only sober moments.
This is a darkly humorous story about madmen and normal people, absurdity and reality, pretending and living.
