In my previous life, I was the lowliest peach blossom spirit in the Celestial Realm. I trained with all my might, hoping only to become worthy of that aloof, heartless High God.
He told me to get lost, but I clung to him anyway. He never spared me a glance, yet I believed that if I tried hard enough, one day he would see me.
Until the celestial laws condemned me. He raised his sword with his own hands and said, “From beginning to end, this was all wishful thinking on your part.”
That sword pierced my heart, and my soul dispersed.
In this life, I was reborn with no memory, and a mortal took me in. He said I was a demon, and that he was the only one who wouldn’t hurt me. I believed him, washing clothes and cooking, until I had become little more than his shadow.
I thought at last I had found someone who truly cared for me.
Until that man appeared again and pierced the mortal’s chest with his sword.
My memories came rushing back like a rising tide. I remembered that sword, those words, and the cold indifference in his eyes, not an ounce of warmth in them.
I hated him. I hated him enough to trade a century of accumulated merit for the Demon King’s aid, to lead an army against the Celestial Court, and to make sure he would never know peace, even if I couldn’t kill him.
But he resigned from his divine post, dragged me back to that shabby courtyard in the mortal world, and said:
“You hate me. I know. You can’t kill me, so stay here and take your time thinking of another way.”
I poisoned his food, and he ate it without hesitation. I crept up with a knife in the middle of the night, but he opened his eyes and said, “Still awake?”
I smashed everything in sight, and he picked it all up, piece by piece.
The old lady next door said, “The way he looks at you, you’d think you were his whole life.”
