The Epic of the Cold-Gate Scholar is a sweeping historical novel set during the Wei and Jin dynasties. It tells the story of Lu Yunshen, a scholar from a humble family, and how he rises from an orphan in Taiyuan to a celebrated general in the Northern Expeditions, using his learning, courage, and strategic brilliance to overcome the Nine Ranks system monopolized by powerful clans and ultimately drive social change. The story begins during the Yongjia era of the Western Jin dynasty. Lu Yunshen, a poor scholar from Taiyuan, sees his family fall into ruin after his father is framed by the powerful clans and wrongfully put to death. Carrying his father’s manuscript of the Mao Odes and a paper knife, he makes his way alone to the Imperial Academy in Luoyang to study. Though he endures humiliation at the school, where family background determines everything, he forms an oath of brotherhood with fellow scholars from humble families, including Han Jizi and Gu Wenruo. When the Rebellion of the Eight Princes breaks out, he follows Prince of Langya Sima Rui south to Jiankang, navigating the power struggles among the Jiangdong clans led by Wang Dao, Yu Liang, and Huan Wen. He forms the Northern Garrison Camp of Cold-Gate Scholars and distinguishes himself at the Battle of Fei River. Yet after achieving fame and success, he faces an even greater dilemma: when scholars from humble families gain power, will they become a new aristocracy? Is the Northern Expedition merely about driving out the Hu peoples, or is it meant to break the thousand-year-old system and its accumulated injustices?
