Living Off Daji While Rebelling Against King Zhou

Su Yan, a poor scholar from a humble family, was a down-and-out bookworm on the outskirts of Yinxu until a chance encounter brought him to the attention of Daji, who had just entered the palace as empress. Condemned by later generations as a “demonic beauty who brought ruin to the kingdom,” Daji was no mere seductress who charmed the ruler. She carried a secret mission for the Su tribe and had long grown resentful of Di Xin’s tyranny. Reading the situation shrewdly, Su Yan willingly put aside his pride and, under Daji’s protection, rose from an ordinary commoner to a new power in Zhaoge, settling into a life of “living off a woman.” On the surface, he curries favor with the powerful and craves wealth; in truth, he harbors grand ambitions. He uses Daji’s influence to win people over and build his strength, while secretly reaching out to loyal ministers persecuted by Di Xin and lords driven from their lands, even maintaining covert ties with Xiqi. He exploits Di Xin’s suspicions to eliminate rivals and uses Daji’s favor to sway court affairs, advancing step by step through the narrow gap between the inner palace and the royal court, finding a way forward amid a deadly game of power and bloodshed. Some condemn him as a toady and ingrate who climbed the ranks on a woman’s coattails; others praise his foresight and patience, saying he turns softness into strength to win the realm. From Daji’s “servant beneath her skirts” to a warlord who reshapes the world, Su Yan’s act of “living off a woman” sets off a storm that will topple the Shang dynasty of King Zhou. When the horns of the Battle of Muye sound and Zhaoge goes up in flames, he finally casts off his disguise and stands beside Daji, brandishing the blade of rebellion against the tottering Shang dynasty. This time, he wants more than wealth gained by depending on others: he wants the power to remake the world, peace to end the chaos, and a chance to rule a new realm alongside the woman the world has misunderstood.
