Synopsis

Si Yan ranked in the city's top ten on the written exam and answered every interview question with ease. He thought he was a shoo-in for a key department at the municipal bureau.

Then a reassignment notice dumped him in the Civil Affairs Bureau's most obscure department: Folk Customs Affairs Coordination.

A dilapidated little building, crumbling walls, and a department head whose idea of work was steeping goji berries and reading the newspaper.

Si Yan thought: A cushy government post, a perfect place to coast into retirement. Can't go wrong.

Then a dripping-wet female ghost floated in and wailed, “I'm here to petition the authorities!” That's when he learned he'd passed the exam to become not a civil servant, but a mediator for the underworld!

Armed with the Handbook for Mediating Underworld Disputes, Si Yan was forced to get to work. While others exorcised ghosts with talismans, he used the Civil Code. While others subdued demons with magic artifacts, he followed official procedure. When a vengeful spirit complained that a scumbag had cheated her out of her life, he contacted the women's federation for legal aid. When a murderous ghost haunted a home, he helped the developer organize the lawsuit paperwork.

His coworker was an overtime-loving ghost who had been dead for ten years, his partner was a staunchly materialist policewoman, and his immediate superior was an inspector from the Heavenly Court. All manner of monsters and demons lined up to submit applications.

Si Yan thought that was as bad as it could get.

Then the ancient gods broke free of their seals and the Void invaded the Three Realms. Behind him stood a million underworld soldiers, heavenly troops and generals, auspicious beasts of the Immortal Clan, and the New Year's wishes of 1.4 billion people across the country.

How did this lousy job somehow end up restoring order to the Three Realms?

The biggest contractor between the worlds of yin and yang is online to mediate disputes and handle everything by the book.
