Kaifeng, known in ancient times as Bianliang, is a city built atop layers of cities.
The Yellow River has flooded it time and again, and each time it has been rebuilt.
So buried beneath the ground are not just the ruins of one old city.
Drawing on real locations such as Longting Park, the Drum Tower Night Market, and the Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden, this book records local tales of the supernatural:
Drumbeats sounding in the dead of night, with no one there to strike them,
Something in the lake that grabs at people,
A figure appearing in a photograph that wasn’t there before,
And footsteps coming from underground.
There is no protagonist here.
Because in Bianliang,
those walking above the city may not belong to this layer alone.
