In 1960, after a devastating disaster, six-year-old Yaya wakes up in the ruins.
She brushes the dirt off herself and, just as she always does, slings on her little schoolbag stitched with a red star and sets out on the long road to find her older brother in the army.
When she is hungry, she picks up steamed buns by the roadside. When she is tired, she sleeps in an abandoned temple. Even walking through the snow, she leaves footprints behind.
So why does nobody on the road pay any attention to her?
The uncle she asks for directions is clearly looking her way, yet answers as if he were speaking to someone else.
Yaya doesn’t mind. She believes that if she just keeps walking, she will find her brother.
Along the way, she meets many strange people: a blind grandmother waiting among the ruins for her son, who died in battle, and a stubborn old soldier who insists on patrolling with an empty rifle... Yaya can talk with them, and she can use her mysterious “strength” to help living people in danger, even though each time she does, she becomes dizzy and sees stars.
Then one day, her brother in the army finally receives an old letter covered in mud. The entire military region breaks down in tears and frantically searches for the tiny three-foot-tall child who walked a thousand miles...
