Chen Mo was a boy from an ordinary farming family in a small mountain village. Every day, he went out to gather firewood. Whenever he passed the village temple on his way home, he couldn’t help looking inside. Each time he saw the statue of a god, he wondered why its eyes were cast downward. What, exactly, was it looking at?

But one night, another band of demons and monsters attacked. By dawn, not a single soul remained in the village, not even the chickens or dogs.
