1937, Shanghai. The artillery fire of the Battle of Songhu tore apart the prosperity of Shili Foreign Market.
Shen Qingyan, the young editor of "Ta Kung Pao", was rescued by a patrolman named Huo Huaijin in the ruins of Hongkou. One is a scholar as gentle as jade, and the other is a warrior as cold as a sword. They met in the flames of war, got to know each other on an isolated island, and found reasons to work together in their most secret identities - reporters and underground party members.
During the eight years of the war of resistance, the mountains and rivers were shattered. They went from Shanghai to Chongqing, from Chongqing back to Shanghai, and from the prosperous city to the mountain village of Wannan. Artillery fire, bombing, arrest, torture, separation, reunion... Every time you turn around, you may say goodbye forever, and every word "take care" is as important as a thousand stones. In the long night, they used each other's light to illuminate each other and the road to dawn.
This is a story about family, country and faith, as well as a story about waiting and repetition. Two souls who refused to bow supported each other in the torrent of the times, from the dumplings on New Year's Eve in 1937 to the reunion on the Bund in 1945 - "Sir, do you still want your inkstone?"
The mountains and rivers are shattered, and you and I are just glimmers of light. But a glimmer of light can illuminate a glimmer of light, and there is still hope in this world.
