The Story of the Green Robe

"The Story of the Green Robe" is a classical realism novel set in the fictional "Great Zhou" dynasty. The work takes the imperial examination career of Chen Xun, a poor boy from Guanzhong, as the main line, panoramicly showing the survival, struggle and growth of a lower-class scholar at the end of the feudal dynasty. The title of the book "Green Robe" has three meanings: first, it is the iconic dress of a poor scholar, symbolizing his origin; second, it is a symbol of poverty and self-restraint, which means "the green robe is not stained by dust"; third, it is a metaphor for the shackles of fate - those who put on the green robe shoulder the responsibility of changing their destiny and can never look back. The novel begins on a winter night in Chenjiagou. It tells the story of how a young peasant boy relied on his extraordinary talent and tenacity to pass the county examination, government examination, college examination, provincial examination, joint examination, and palace examination, and finally became the top student in high school and became an official.
