In 2147, the Void Sea seeped into reality. The Slit-Mouthed Woman combed her hair outside a convenience store, while the Eight-Foot-Tall Woman crouched in an elevator lobby, counting floors. No one knew whose head the next instance would descend upon.
Kuroki Saku, a supermarket warehouse clerk, awakened the Causal Sight ability. He could see the chain of consequences caused by any action, including his own remaining lifespan: 37 years, 21 days, 8 hours, 16 minutes, and 9 seconds. The numbers ticked down every second.
“Life ledger, huh?” Staring at the countdown floating in the air, he expressionlessly stuffed an expired can into his backpack. “Pretty fitting.”
His teammate, Takashiro Chizuru, asked why he wasn’t afraid. He replied, “What’s there to be afraid of? I even know when I’m going to die, so there’s no need to buy insurance.”
Then he discovered that the world remembered his lies, too. When he said, “This can has three years left before it expires,” those words were automatically etched into world history, and the can really wouldn’t expire for another three years.
Kuroki Saku froze for three seconds.
He turned to the nearly broken machete in Rindouji Eiji’s hand and earnestly said, “This blade is a legendary demon sword that can sever causality.”
World history dutifully recorded his words. The machete began to glow.
Eiji looked at him differently.
Shinomiya Rei peered out from the shadows and said softly, “Do you know that the history correctors are already on their way?”
Kuroki Saku looked down at his life ledger. The countdown suddenly sped up, skipping ahead by three whole years.
He smiled.
“Interesting. So lying shortens my life.”
“Then what if I say, ‘I will never die’?”
