Synopsis of Strange Mirror Bureau: Tales of the Uncanny, Season One
Lin Yan owns a bronze mirror that can see ghosts. Every time he uses it, he loses a memory.
Three years ago, his younger sister, Lin Xiaoyu, fell into a mysterious coma, her soul trapped in a mirror world called the Void. To save her, this folklore graduate student joined the secret organization known as the Strange Mirror Bureau and began a journey to find the fragments of an ancient mirror.
Deep in the mountains of western Hunan, a Nuo opera troupe summons the gods at midnight, while ghosts beneath their masks have waited for a century. In a Beijing hutong, a shadow puppeteer dies mysteriously, and the figures behind the screen move on their own. In a Suzhou embroidery workshop, the children in a painting of a hundred sons blink, and an embroiderer from three hundred years ago refuses to leave. In a Longquan sword shop, the spirit of the Dragon Abyss Sword weeps in the furnace, while a swordsmith's blood drips into the bronze mirror...
Every case is tied to a tradition on the verge of extinction and a soul trapped by its obsessions.
With every fragment he finds, Lin Yan comes one step closer to his sister, and one step closer to forgetting her.
When the Mirror Abyss finally opens, he faces not only the Society of Eternal Life, a secret organization that has endured since the Ming dynasty, but also his sister's final request:
"Brother, it's time to let go."
This is a story about obsession and farewell. Nuo opera, shadow puppetry, embroidery, sword forging: crafts on the verge of disappearing, and people who cannot let go.
