Set against the backdrop of the outbreak of the Songhu Battle in the 26th year of the Republic of China (1937), it tells the story of Shen Niantang, the daughter of the storekeeper of Renjitang Pharmacy in Zhabei, Shanghai, who started her own business in a desperate situation when her father was killed and the war was approaching. She also met Gu Huaishan, an underground anti-Japanese worker, and used the pharmacy as a cover to treat the wounded and deliver medicines during the turbulent years.
