A depressed painter flees to the Miao region to clear her head, only to fall for a village-bound saintess. After accidentally being struck by a love gu, she flees in a panic, but the saintess catches her on horseback and brings her back. “That wasn't a gu,” she says, wiping away her tears. “I love you.” But the saintess's duty ultimately turns their encounter into a lifelong heartache.
