The protagonist Xing takes the little paper man on a journey to eliminate demons and protect the Tao. On the way, he meets Lin Wan'er (nine-tailed fox), Feng Jiuge (Shu Mountain), Liu Ruyan (a female ghost in the Republic of China) and other confidants. He integrates the mythical beasts of the mountains and seas, Taoist magic, and real supernatural events in China to create a different world of immortality.
