In 2049, the full-dive online game Immortal Path opens its beta, drawing in one billion players.
Gu Chang'an gains the hidden profession of [Mountain God], rules over a territory, and receives offerings from its people.
But he soon realizes this isn't a game:
NPCs can really die.
Massacres, looting, betrayal... The players think they're "playing a game," unaware that they're committing crimes in the real world.
Gu Chang'an chooses a different path.
He establishes a sanctuary to protect NPCs, as well as players willing to awaken.
But chaos has arrived. The seven kingdoms vie for supremacy, and the tide of history rolls ever onward.
A young man calling himself "Zhao Zheng" comes to visit three times.
"Mountain God," he says, "the mountains belong to all under heaven. Can you protect them?"
Gu Chang'an doesn't know the answer.
He only knows that in this world where illusion and reality intertwine,
gods are not omnipotent.
But people can choose not to do evil.
