The Eastern Zhou: A Brief History of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods

Compiled by the eminent historian Gu Jiegang, this book offers an accessible account of more than five centuries of grand history during the Eastern Zhou. Beginning with King Ping of Zhou’s eastward migration, it details the shifting fortunes of the hegemonic lords in the Spring and Autumn period and the rivalry among the Seven Warring States. Drawing on the ideas of the Doubting Antiquity School, the author guides readers in separating fact from fiction even as he tells the story, making this an excellent introduction to the political, military, and intellectual transformations of pre-Qin China.
