Since the largest nuclear war in the history of humanity’s old world came to an end, nine-tenths of Earth’s surface has become a dead, radioactive wasteland.
The scorched earth lies cracked, poisonous fog chokes the air, and radioactive dust blankets the sky year-round, shutting out the sun completely.
The surviving humans huddle in safe zones enclosed by towering walls, fortresses deep in the mountains, strongholds buried underground, and cities floating high in the sky, barely clinging to life amid the embers of doomsday.
The catastrophe that nearly burned civilization to ashes came to be known by later generations of survivors as the War of Annihilation.
It wiped out nine-tenths of Earth’s vitality, destroying the old world’s nations, history, faith, and order. It also robbed humanity of the right to look up at the sun.
From then on, the earth sank into eternal darkness, and human civilization entered the Age of Endless Night.
After the fighting stopped, the old world order had vanished without a trace. Four corporate giants seized the opportunity to rise and take control of the new order of the apocalypse:
Tiangong Xuanshu, founded by survivors from the former Huaxia region, bored through the Kunlun Mountains and built a fortress within them;
Yellow Springs Biotech, founded by survivors from the former Sakura Country, dug ten thousand zhang beneath the ruins of Tokyo to construct an underground stronghold;
the Ironframe Alliance, established by survivors from the former Lighthouse Country, suspended a floating city above the ruins of the Statue of Liberty;
and the Covenant Church, formed by survivors from the former Holy City of Vatican, enclosed the ruins of a church within walls a hundred zhang high.
The four corporations jointly formed the United Council, governing the laws, ruling the territories, monopolizing resources, and defining good and evil.
On this wasteland of endless night, interwoven with iron and blood, radiation and despair, humanity finally managed to gain a tenuous foothold through cold regulations and walls of steel.
