In the late autumn of 1937, at the welcome party of Nanjing Central University, Chen Xubai of the journalism department, Zhou Yifan of the sociology department, and Su Wanqing of the foreign languages department met on the eve of a world at war. Amid the artillery fire, the three carved “We will surely meet again” into the hill behind the school, promising to reunite after the war, only to be swept apart by history.
Over the next fifty years, they followed entirely different paths. War changed more than the passing years; it became a thunderclap after a time of suffering.
