In Lingnan, from the tenth to the seventeenth year of the Republic of China, Niu Shuhan, a student at the Guangdong Provincial Girls’ High School, and Liu Feng, her music teacher, fall in love through the sound of the qin. Beneath the banyan trees, they swear their love to each other under the moon. But Liu Feng marries a banker's daughter to curry favor with the powerful, while Shuhan’s family is framed by the Beiyang Army and left ruined.
After being forced into a brothel, Shuhan is abducted by the bandit Yin Rui and reunited with Liu Feng, now a general in the Northern Expedition Army. In a time of chaos, love becomes a casualty of political schemes and war. Torn between redemption and ruin, Shuhan ultimately ends her earthly ties at the edge of a cliff.
As an onlooker, Su Manshu witnesses the rise and fall of this ill-fated love. The rain and qin music of Lingnan weave together a tale of love and betrayal, redemption and loss, forever capturing a bloodstained romance beside the Stone of Three Lives.
