The Future in the Ledger tells the story of Zhao Yang, a young migrant worker, and the strange events and struggles he faces at a factory in southern China.
In 1990, in the Pearl River Delta, Zhao Yang has just come of age. Desperate to help his family raise some money, he takes a job at Hongda Plastics Factory, where he unexpectedly discovers an old ledger in the warehouse. Its pages are yellow with age, filled not only with code words for smuggling deals but also with records of his future: “June 1990, the East changes hands,” “Zhao Yang heads to Hunan,” “Co-founds a small factory with someone”... Even stranger, the “via Hong Kong to Xin” shipping route and the mysterious molds mentioned repeatedly in the ledger match the factory’s odd details one by one.
Zhao Yang only means to earn some money and leave, but he gets caught up in a smuggling conspiracy. The seemingly kind factory director is secretly trafficking weapon parts, a man with a gold watch at the docks has a sinister gaze, and even Officer Li, whom Zhao trusts, seems to be hiding something. His only ally is Chen Mei, a female worker who is always picking up discarded plastic bottles. Meanwhile, the writing in the ledger sometimes seems to come alive, adding new prophecies.
From Hongda to Dongfang Factory, from chasing a killer at the docks to the countryside of Hunan, Zhao Yang carries the ledger and its secrets as he collides with the smugglers’ pursuit and the hints of fate. He must fight not only armed desperadoes but also the path that seems to have been written for him in the ledger. When the future is revealed in advance, should he accept his fate and give in, or grip a wrench and smash out a road of his own amid grease and flames?
This is a story about ordinary people struggling in the folds of an era. It has the smell of machine oil from the factory floor, the salty sea breeze of the docks, and, between the pages of the ledger, the indomitable spirit and quiet brilliance of little people.
