Towering red walls and swaying palace lanterns confined the youth of the women within, but could not conceal the dark currents in their hearts.
Shen Qingci, a powerless concubine-born daughter, made her way into the imperial selection through her own efforts and, by a stroke of luck, was granted the rank of Answering Lady, eighth rank. Thus began her plunge into the unfathomable whirlpool of the imperial harem.
Can she rely on her own wit and turn the situation to her advantage, rising from a lowly Answering Lady to claim a secure place in the palace? What secrets will be revealed by the hostility lurking in the shadows and the untold past? Behind the red walls, love and hate intertwine, and schemes churn beneath the surface. See how Shen Qingci, a concubine-born daughter, emerges from the depths of palace intrigue like a butterfly from its cocoon and finds a way to protect herself.
