Synopsis

In Fenghuang, western Hunan, Chen Lu, a master who practices both Maoshan and Meishan arts, finds a copper coin engraved with the character “Lu” in a fresh grave. The dead person’s soul has been taken, and the coin is an invitation left for him.

That same night, a woman named Mei Ruosheng arrives through the rain. Her arms are covered in living patterns, and she carries a lost handwritten text, The Lu-Mei Art. Chen Lu has the same markings on his arm. They are something he sealed away ten years ago.

The Lu-Mei Art is an ancient tradition that can only be practiced by a man and a woman, one surnamed Lu and the other Mei. Once mastered, it binds their lives together, but neither can live past thirty-five.

Chen Lu is thirty-four. Mei Ruosheng is twenty-eight.

They return to the Hundred Thousand Mountains of Guangxi and discover that Mei Ruosheng’s grandmother did not die of old age. She used the Heaven-Sealing Seal to pin her soul beneath the sky, keeping a creature with golden, vertical pupils imprisoned. It is waiting.

Waiting for the seal to weaken. Waiting for the Lu-Mei Art to be made whole. Waiting for the two of them to open that door.
