Half a Life Remains: May the Wind Come to Rest with You

Lin Shishen, 32, CEO of the Lin Group, has been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. He has six months left to live.

He doesn’t tell his wife, Bai Lu. Instead, he chooses the cruelest way to push her away: giving her the silent treatment, staying out all night, criticizing her cooking, and finally handing her divorce papers.

Bai Lu finds his diagnosis.

Only then does she understand. He hasn’t stopped loving her. He’s dying.

She does everything she can to stay by his side: making soup, accompanying him to appointments, helping him through chemotherapy, and easing his pain.

In secret, he draws up a will, leaving all his property to her. He even finds her someone to rely on in the future, looking into the background of a college classmate who once pursued her. Only after confirming the man is decent does he feel safe “entrusting” her to him.

When she finds out, she trembles with fury. “Lin Shishen, you’re a coward! You’re afraid people will laugh at me for being a widow, so you want me to get divorced. You’re afraid of everything. Aren’t you afraid I’ll hate you?”

For the last time, he has fireworks set off in the hospital courtyard. Beneath a sky full of golden light, he leans against her shoulder and quietly closes his eyes.

A letter is left in his pocket. Its final line reads:

“Don’t meet me in your next life. But if you still come looking for me, I’ll be there.”

With only half a year left, he uses every ounce of strength to push her away; she fights with all she has to stay. The wind comes to rest with you, and stays for every day of the rest of your life.
