A rainy night on the Canglan River. Shen Qingtang, an investigating commissioner of the Shence Bureau, is hunted by a mysterious force and driven to the brink. With nowhere else to turn, she sends a distress signal to the Netherworld Ferry, said to be a place from which no one returns alive.
Through the thick fog, a black-canopied boat cuts through the waves. A slender figure in indigo fighting clothes stands at the bow, a chain sword at their waist moving like a living thing. The figure accepts the “fare” and hauls the gravely wounded Shen Qingtang aboard.
But her pursuers refuse to give up. During a fierce battle on the river, Shen Qingtang gets her first glimpse of the Netherworld Ferry’s master, and those eyes, shimmering silver in the darkness, seem able to see through every illusion.
Even more unsettling, when the half of a jade pendant in her arms draws near the master, it begins to grow faintly warm…
